Polar Opposites: Part 4 >> Jesus and Conversion are polar opposites

In the first three parts, we have looked at how religion, religious leaders and crusaders are polar opposites of Jesus. In part 3 we also looked at how the religious establishment abused Jesus' message on the Kingdom of God to expand and grow rich and going against what Jesus taught. This is Part 4: Jesus and Conversion are polar opposites

Misunderstanding 6. Jesus asked his followers to go all over the world and to convert people. FALSE.
Misunderstanding 7. Jesus asked his followers to use all means necessary to fool, force or coerce people into following Him. FALSE.

We will look at both these misunderstandings in the light of two controversial topics conversion and baptism.

The great commission controversy: Jesus told his disciples to go to all the nations, to teach the news about the Kingdom of God which He Himself had been proclaiming for the three years He taught publicly, to baptize those who believe in the message and to teach His commandments to all those who want to learn
This has become controversial because kings (such as Constantine I of the Roman empire created the 'christian' state religion about Jesus and enforced it, Charlamagne did in Gaul), religious powers (Pope Innocent III offered conversion instead of torture, the horrors of the Portuguese inquisition in Goa, India), political powers (all colonial expansionists e.g. British in India, Spanish in Americas), power plays (e.g. corporations, agencies, non-profits, free-trade treaties) have abused Jesus' words to suit their own political power and expansion agendas. They used every means possible - sword, force, tricks, or bribes, threats, economic stimulus for their own greed under the garb of religion which Jesus never asked them to establish, conversions which Jesus never asked them to perform and building a kingdoms and empires which Jesus does not ask of anyone.
Yet one cannot find even one time Jesus did such things or taught His disciples to use force or tricks or give bribes to get “more numbers”. In fact He always said “many are called but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14), “... only few find it” (Matthew 7:14).
Nowhere was Jesus ever interested in getting anything but a genuine and willing response. Should a messenger of Jesus (bearing the news of God's action on behalf of all humanity) not find the message welcome, He told His disciples they should “leave that home or town”. (Matthew 10:14).  The great commission assigned by Jesus is to tell the message (like TED talks) and teach those who are interested, the task is NOT to convert anyone.

🙏Lament & Hope: The lament is for the wrong done by crusaders, tricksters, false preachers, colonialists, established religion, religion as a business peddlers and the kind which has resulted in the very justified hatred that the world has towards these that have twisted the truth for their own greed, power and politics. The hope is that God searches for and finds the heart He foreknows is His despite the chaos and lies.

The baptism controversy: This is also controversial because the most common interpretation of the verb baptize has come to mean to convert from one religion to another. However, it is the opinion of the author of this blog that it is not about adopting a new religion since no religion was needed to be formed in the first place. Rather this is about an outward action signifying the internal transformation from a state of spiritual deadness to a state of having the spirit made alive by joining with His Holy Spirit.
It is important to note that dipping in waters of rivers was a common practice to denote similar concept in many places in the world across different cultures and spiritual paths that predate Jesus. The prophet John was aiding people to do this in Israel even before Jesus ever appeared on the scene. The people in middle-east from centuries before had the concept of dipping in rivers or waterfalls to signify spiritual transformation.
So, it is the opinion of this blog’s author that this practice was not introduced by Jesus, rather He asked people to use what was culturally relevant then to signify the internal spiritual transformation. The Greek word which comes from the verb used to describe sunk ships and its Latin equivalent simply mean 'to immerse'. The word used was in the vernacular to emphasize the effect, not the process

🙏Lament: It is sad and unfortunate that this has been made into a drastic event, divorcing one from one’s cultural roots and a mandatory ritual by culturally insensitive propagators. Colonialists (like the British in India) used it in the worst possible cruel ways such as throwing bread in wells and guilt-tripping Indian villagers into obligatory conversion since they drank water with "Jesus bread" in it.

Finally, I leave you with this quote of Jesus, “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.” - Matthew 23:15.
Hopefully that helps you understand how very angry Jesus was at those whose motivation was expanding their religion instead of living a life full of God's love that overflows in being His hands and feet in the world by feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty, clothing the naked, looking after the sick, visiting the lonely in prisons and genuinely loving people within reach.

Polar Opposites: Part 3 >> Jesus and Crusaders are polar opposites

This is part three of four on discussing misunderstandings about Jesus, religion, religious expansion and conversion.  In Part 1 we looked at established religion and in Part 2 we looked at religious leaders and in both parts we see that these are polar opposites of Jesus. This is Part 3: Jesus and Crusaders are polar opposites

Misunderstanding 4. Jesus asked us to set up His Kingdom on earth. FALSE.
When Jesus taught a model for the simple and straight forward prayer, He included a phrase to ask of God "may your kingdom come". What does that mean? It means asking God to establish heaven on earth by booting out evil completely not a hint for any human to assume this mantle and set up kingdoms in God's name.  The new testament eyewitness accounts quote Jesus referring to the phrases “Kingdom of heaven” or “Kingdom of God” 86 times according to the NIV translation. Not once in these 86 quotes does Jesus ask for any human help to establish the Kingdom of God. So what does Jesus say in these 86 times He talks about the Kingdom of God?

  • Describes what the Kingdom of God is like
  • Talks about the unlikely candidates who will find it easy to enter it,
  • Talks about the likely candidates who will find it hard to even understand it leave alone enter it
  • Talks about it becoming accessible to humans because of Him
  • Presents several parables to help people understand it’s somewhat unexpected and surprising characteristics.
  • Asks humans to proclaim that the kingdom of God is within reach and to tell about it
  • He NEVER tells anyone to build a kingdom, conquer lands or establish it or force or coerce people into it.
When Pontius Pilate the Roman governor asked Jesus whether he was a king trying to start an uprising as accused by the Jewish religious leaders he told him clearly that His goal was not to conquer like earthly kings. Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.” - John 18:36

Misunderstanding 5. The crusaders were following Jesus’s commands to wage war and conquer lands and countries in order to establish The Kingdom of God on the earth. FALSE.

Jesus does not need anyone's help to do whatever He wants about bringing an end to evil and finally uniting heaven and earth i.e. "God's Kingdom on earth".  He prevented the use of violence when his followers wanted to use swords to defend themselves.

When Jesus' followers  tried to attack the soldiers that came to arrest Jesus, He told them that this was not the way. “Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.” - Matthew 26:50-52 and  they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him. - Luke 22:49-51 and  "Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away!” - John 18:10-11

Jesus told people to not attack back, not retaliate nor seek revenge. But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. - Matthew 5:3

He has more powerful ways to do whatever He wants about His Kingdom that do not need human assistance to establish it nor wage wars to enforce it: “The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.” - Matthew 13:14 and “This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous” - Matthew 13:49 and “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” - Matthew 26:53 and “And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.” - Mark 13:27

What this reveals is that the Crusaders were like any other power hungry group only this time they were motivated by religious leaders who incited them to use violence and justified it as holy duty to establish the Kingdom of God. In reality, the religious leaders were establishing their "own kingdom" no different than some politicians of today who use what is fundamentally good to twist it for the establishment of their own power and authority.

Polar Opposites: Part 1 >> Jesus and Religion are polar opposites.

In terms of analogy “Jesus is to Religion is as to North Pole is to South Pole” meaning Jesus and Religion are polar opposites. Jesus was not keen on religion, reading his teachings make that evident.
The pursuit of God is NOT about propagating or protecting any religion. In fact, spiritual pursuit does not need any religion. No conversions are necessary in any direction because God does not sit in any of the human-made religious cultures or boxes, only humans occupy these boxes. In this four part post, I am going to take a look at the more common misunderstandings about Jesus and use nothing more than the words of Jesus to draw out the plain truth.  This is Part 1: Jesus and Religion are polar opposites.

Misunderstanding 1.  Jesus was the founder of the religion of Christianity. FALSE.

You will not find a single line spoken by Jesus as recorded by four different contemporaries (three eyewitness followers, one doctor who did his own investigation into the life of Jesus) that even hints at establishing a new religion. For the record, Jesus is not the founder of Christianity, Emperor Constantine is. He merged his existing sun-worship religious systems with teachings of Jesus and created a state religion used as vehicle to unite people under some banner, to rule and expand his government.
Jesus did not ask for the establishment of religious orders and hierarchies.  "But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” - Matthew 23:8-12.
Note: Jesus was not referring to biological fathers here as it is clear from the context but rather to religious figures who were addressed as such.

Consider the leading religions and denominations of this world and reach your own conclusion about whether they are following what Jesus said in this matter.

Misunderstanding 2. Jesus asked his followers to setup a new religion based on his teachings and his message. FALSE.

Jesus came to bridge the gap between God and human. Not by creating a new religion but by His becoming the way to exchange our inability with His ability and to exchange our spiritual deadness with life in His Spirit.

First of all, what is the message of Jesus? "God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but should have everlasting life." - John 3:16
Second, what were Jesus commandments? "Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees (one religious group), the Pharisees (another religious group) got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” - Matthew 22:34-4
Third, what did Jesus say was the "work of God"? Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” - John 6:28-29

Consider what Jesus said, His commands and His opinion on how we make this great exchange and decide for yourself whether this is a command to create a new religion.
